So i’m a little late…. but our assignment in our devotional book said to find an interesting fact about Peru, and share it with the team! I love art, and I love ancient history. I love history period, but especially ancient. For a long time I wanted to become an archaeologist, and further discoveries regarding The Ark and the Garden of Eden and find a Bible story and uncover secrets and artifacts to support the Biblical narrative.

Well anyways…. in doing a little research, I discovered that Peru is home to one of the new Seven Wonders of the World! Machu Picchu (also known as “The Lost City of the Incans”) is located on a mountain ridge above the Urubomba Valley thousands of feet above sea level. It was built by the Incas in 1450 but was abandoned due to the Spanish Conquistadors only a century later. In 1911 it was brought to world-wide attention.

The structure of Machi Picchu is built in the traditional Incan style of polished dry-stone walls of exact shape. This Incan style is called “ashlar”. It’s really crazy how this works, especially considering the primitiveness of the time period and culture it was built in! They would cut big blocks to fit with one another perfectly, therefore cutting out the need for mortar! How insane is that?! HUGE buildings and architectural structures with NO mortar/cement! The Incas also constructed their buildings in an attempt to prevent earthquake damage. The corners are rounded, the structure is not straight up, but instead slightly angles with every layer, and a bunch of other neat tricks. These tactics have played a huge role in preserving Machu Picchu and other great cities for hundreds of years.

Because the wheel was not used at all in the Incan culture during the time Machu Picchu was built, it is a mystery as to HOW these enormous granite blocks were moved! It is suspected that hundreds of men would push these blocks up inclined planes using little knobs as leverage. After they were placed, the knobs were rubbed off. Obesity was prooobably not a problem for the Incas. ha.

Well that’s it! I thought that was an interesting fact about Peru! There are only SEVEN locations (obviously) for the Seven Wonders of the World, and it’s pretty cool that Peru is one of them!
I’m looking forward to reading some more tidbits of information y’all come up with! =)
